Typographic portraits
CONCEPT
Creating typographic portraits is a colourful way to celebrate the people in your life. I’d created a black-and-white version for my nephew back in 2021 (see further below), so decided to revisit the idea and give it a neon makeover using paint pens. The result is a playful, vibrant way to bring together the words, qualities and little quirks you love about your family and friends, turning them into portraits that are as individual as the people themselves.
PROCESS
The process involves handlettering words and phrases onto tracing paper, then rubbing the design onto black card using graphite. Because faces are so different, the lettering size and orientation produces a dynamic effect resulting in creative contouring of each face. Last to be added are the eyebrows, teeth, nose and mouth, bringing characters to life through a mix of lettering, colour and illustration.
OUTCOME
The finished portraits became the starting point for a hands-on lettering workshop that I pitched to schools, councils and hospitals. Gold Coast City Council picked up the concept for its Neon Neighbourhood school holiday program in October and November 2026, but the activity is equally suited to adult workshops, community groups and creative team-building sessions.
